Lupin the 3rd: Part 6

Green jacket (2021–22, 24 episodes)

(Again, "jacket color" has broken down as a useful identifier – if someone talks about "the green jacket series" they're probably referring to Part I.)

We again see the "two big arcs that tie together in the finale" structure; this series actually switched directors at the halfway point, making the plots and general style feel more separate than in IV and V. The first arc pits Lupin's team against the legendary Sherlock Holmes – seeking the thief for his involvement in the death of Dr. Watson ten years earlier – as both men investigate a secret society in the shadows of England. The second half focuses on the woman Tomoe – Lupin's onetime teacher who may have an even deeper personal connection from his past through his current adventures.

The standalone episodes are farmed out to various writers and range from serious to lighthearted, providing a fascinating variety of stories that shift the spotlight between characters.

Unfortunately this part ends up feeling more than a bit scattershot, with stories and tone often disconnected – careening from a rumination on fallen angels and the nature of evil, to a little girl imagining Fujiko as a lovestruck mermaid, to a brainwashed teen's on-camera murder-suicide. Neither overarching storyline is exceptionally compelling, all said and done – but I do think that a few of the one-shots make good jumping-around fodder. Overall I feel this is the weakest Part.
